5 lb walmart sleeping bag (Coleman, I think, have to check. I think it's supposedly a 10F bag, but it's not enough for 15m, rainy, 34F on my patio. I cut one of the bags in half, made two bags out of it for my legs/feet. taped the windward side and the bottom If you want to get some rest, you definitely need to soften the soil under you and dig depressions for hips and shoulders. When you think the bags are "full" when knotted, lay on them (gently, or they'll rupture some place) smashing down the leaves and forcing out a lot of air. Then you can put at least 50% more debris( if it's leaves) into the bags. Tape closed the openings of all 4 bags, all but 1" in the center and lay on each bag again. Get out all the air you can, then tape that hole. Lay on one bag catty corner, with the head end propped up to serve as a pillow. Tape the windward edge of the two bags that cover your torso /head. (top and bottom) Tape the joint between the two upper and the lower bag. If you have no tape, use cordage as best you can and try to get something pressed up against the gap between the bags on the windward side. |

And in a SHTF scenario you think you would live long enough if you get bumped at zero dark thirty to quickly and quietly exit this monstrosity and get into action fast enough to save your life?

Why all this living in an alley type junk? Garbage bags and trash insulation? To what end? Memories? You can hit an Army/Navy Surplus store and get equipment better than all this crap you talk about (But never show of course) for very little money. Do you miss sleeping on heating grates? Why cobble up this junk in the first place?

I think he believes he will someday be on the show "alone" so he dreams about being prepared for it, but can't even show that he is actually doing any of the stuff he claims. he has too many strikes against him, to ever be on the show: He is on disability. This means he is physically unable to be on the show. They would never allow it for the liability. He is also a convicted felon. This may or may not have any impact, but I'm willing to bet it isn't a plus. he cannot even demonstrate anything he has claimed to have done. He really should provide videos or photos - after all, he could use them to apply to be a contestant. He won't, because he can't produce photos of something he has not actually done. I think he knows he will never be on the show, but it lets him imagine what it would be like, and without doing and failing, he can claim to be victorious. imagination is a wonderful thing. |

Hell's bells, while I can to a extent understand the "improvisation" . Again don't see the need to start with the lowest level of gear. Walmart. Coleman stuff is wannabe hiker shat good for maybe 3-4 weekenders a year any rating is supposed to be in a normal tent on a sleeping pad. Plus I wouldn't trust that economy stuff to be given a proper temp rating to begin with. Used to be not too long ago you could find a complete used USGI MSS for around $100. Or less depending on location. I've also scrounged up the equal of brand new sets for not much more. Only trouble right now is every bubba and his cousin cletus are buying military gear again. But still it one looks. And of course there's much better grade stuff out there but for starters. |

He likes living like a savage.

One of these days Mel will be found frozen stiff on his porch, just one more thing to have to walk around until they finally throw him in a dumpster with the rest of the trash he collected.

The thing is, he hasn't really tried his gear in the wild. He hasn't been in the middle of nowhere in a storm, or had to deal with rocks, twig, brush, etc. he hasn't had to gather debris in the wild. he really doesn't know how it will hold up under real conditions. That is, of course, if he has actually done any of this... |
