there's no denying that saving a week

on a shelter and 3 weeks on wood processing/gathering is a major advantage. When you've got enough clothing to sit out in the wind, at -20F all day icefishing and then you've got a tarp and sleeping bag to wrap up in and a shelter that blocks the wind, wtf would you also need a fire in your shelter.at -40f? It's not that cold except for the final month at most, but they 'think" that they need the fire constanty. scared of 30 lb wolverines

Surely the shelter stops the wind chill. If it was a SEALED, insulated, reflective shelter, it would trap enough of your body heat, with a cold air pit and a raised wooden bed, to let you be .30F warmer and you can have the debris and the poncho/leggings around you., too. I wouldn' even need a sleeping bag, or a fire, and they freeze with both. :-) if you gave them the extra calories and time, they wouldn't know what to do with it. They weave TINY netting, instead of saving wear on their fingers by weaving big netting, over lapping two layers of 3" mesh, and using the sewing needle and the 900 ft of fishline to put a stitch in every other mesh. That saves a ton of time and tedious over-use of small muscles. So you could end up with 1000 sq ft of 1.5" mesh, without having to bother with the splits of local vegetation. That would be enough for several of the baited net pens, in the open water and also enough for the doubleled-up nets under the ice. Hmm, I'll have to think about that.

their fires inside of their 'shelters' were so inefficient that they still had ice on the rock walls of their little fireplaces. their shelters had to be full of holes, so that the fire wouldn't smoke them completely out of their shelter. Then you lose all of your heat out of those holes and introduce convection-currents, that steal all of your heat. So you're doing all of that wood processing for nothing. it's stupid. They get so much clothing that they could easily sleep ok at 20F inside just a tent. to break the wind. They have to wear all of their clothing inside of their so-called 'shelters" anyway, so why bother with the fire, hmm? seal off the air leaks, make the shelter much smaller and reflective, and you wont need the fire.
