alone show constrained to a 5 sq mile area

that's just a 1.2 mile radius from their drop off point and half of that circle is out on the water! So they have VERY little land in which to roam/hunt The odds of your having a big game animal on that small an area, are VERY poor. The odds of your getting a decent bow-shot are a LOT lower. So, having a dozen baited vertical junglewhips and 8-strand cable snares hooking their foot to 150 lbs of drag-log is a better strategy. Such things "hunt' for you while you net-fish, bow-fish, etc.. Sure, you should also have some snares set for small game, have baked clay balls for the slngbow, have take down arrows and keep your slingbow on your person at all times, hang some baited treblehooks to rid your area of predators All of that can and probably will be helpful, but compared to what a pontoon outrigger raft, chum-lines and 2000 sq ft of netting WILL do for you, the hunting and trapping game are WAY back in second place.

Since you're stuck in such a small area, it's even MORE important to not have a fire all the time, at least, until youve scored a big animal. They are not allowed to take more than ONE of each species on great Slave Lake, Canada. So no taking of two musk ox, or 2 wolves, 2 caribou, (if you're playing by the rules). Animals fear and dislike the scent of smoke and typically stay far away from it. So you're screwing yourself as a hunter by having a fire on this challenge. An alternative Swedish torch burns fast, hot and clean, it will do a boil of a gallon of water in 10 minutes. and boil fish to the point that they fall apart in another 5 minutes. then you bury your coals and a bit of charcoal in the ashes and extinquish the Swede.

now watch some dummy like garand claim that 5 sq miles means a 5 mile radius. :-) That would be 78 sq miles and you could still walk off of it in 2 hours, starting at the center of the circle. That's still far too small a hunting area. You need a 10 mile wide radius, so that you get to the edge of your area in half a day and get back to base camp in half a day. That's 314 sq miles. 640 acres to the sq mile. You dont get to pick your spot. It's very common for several miles at a stretch to have no big game at ALL, ever, especially in the desert, or the sub-arctic.

Melvin, if the animals are not in your area, there is nothing you can do about it, regardless of the equipment that you choose.

no ****, sherelock? But having them in your area and getting a decent bow shot are not the same thing, either, when the sun's only out for 7 hours a day. That's why the baited vertical junglewhips and the baited cable foot snares have to be set. I'm pushing for a 200 day, 2 million $ challenge, $10,000 entry fee to keep out the riff-raff.
