Snake Shot shells

Has anyone used these in short barreled carbines for hunting small game like squirrels, grouse, etc? Are they worth the money to stock in a survival scenario?

I use 357 an 44 in short barrels for snakes here at the lake. Never tried from a carbine. Use the CCI ones, both are loud. Years ago I loaded the Speer capusles in 44 mag. With 10 gr. Unique it would shoot thru a 2x12 with out opening, surprised the hell out of me. 22s are worthless. 357 or 44 will cut a snake in half.

I tried the CCI shot with the plastic cap in the Ruger 10/22. Less than satisfactory results. I would not count on it to harvest either Grouse or Squirrels farther than fifteen or twenty feet and that's pushing it. The shot will not pattern well due to the rifling and lack of penetration would lose most anything shot with it. It would be handy with Snakes at six feet, although a Ruger .45 LC with shot would be better.

It was just a thought, I watched a video on You tube earlier today indicating the blue cap wouldn't make it out of a 16" barrel. By all accounts snake shot in .44 mag, .45 LC & .45acp work well on snakes, I'm guessing that if you were close enough they would take down a grouse or a rabbit without to much trouble.

Decades ago I once used a .38/.357CCI Shot shell to take out a "yard varmint" out if a 6" barrel Ruger Security Six. Roughly 30ft but it was running and I may have fired two rounds. That was almost 40years ago.

I don't remember any problem like that. They wouldn't work the semi-auto action, of course.
