answer was right under my nose.

I had abandoned the Escape SOL bivvy, because it wasn't warm enough. but it DOES breathe well enough to do away with enough of the condensation. So I put a double-size Escape inside of a 2-person SOL emergency bivvy (thinner and made of the shiny sort of mylar. I did 3 hours this morning, before it got over 40F again, started at 35F, with nothing but my cammies, regular socks and trail runners. I wasn't cozy, but it was definitely ok. I'm gonna skip the extra flannel foot wraps and the longjohn pants. The bug nets wrapped around my legs and the drum liners full of debris, can be inside of the mylar bags and I can be inside of them. and I'll be ok at 20F, without a fire or even the hot rocks/water. The longjohns would be useless in the summer time. If shtf in cold weather, I'll have my parka at-hand, and if shtf with the cold a few months away, I'll bicycle or drift my way south and not have to bother with such crap.

Van don't run? Kinda hard to carry bags of garbage/ trash on a bicycle. Old weak legs would not get a mile on a bicycle, somebody has been dreaming again.

The goals of speed of movement and mobility become a bad joke when your hauling a couple of bags of garbage with you. But then Melvin isn't cluttered up with things like firearms because he is a felon.

Wonder if he has ever thought about the other stuff he might need? How about something to light that candle or a knife of some sort to spread the peanut butter. Guess other needed things don't matter. Maybe he just plans to shoot people with his 10in. AR an steal their things. First 15 minutes of SHTF, he will be a dead thing laying there .

I believe you are correct about Melvin's plans, I would have given him a couple of hours or at least until he ran into the first person who had actually planned ahead.

I still don't get it. I'm comfortable at 20 degrees in a t-shirt and my underwear in my bag and cover. I can easily bundle up if I need if it is colder, and I an open my bag or sleep on top of it if it's too warm.

weighs less, packs smaller, and is more durable.

Either the bags of trash are not doing their job at 40 degrees or the years of drugs have taken a toll on the old wore out thing. To me 40 is nice weather.
We could be nice an all chip in an buy Mel a sleeping bag but he would pawn it for a couple bucks.

40 degrees is perfect for camping. cold enough for a nice camp fire, warm enough that you don't need a lot of gear.

40F is a wonderful temperature, but Melvin forgets that weather is not a static event, nor will he be able to go to ground for 6-8 hours in an area that is not completely safe. There is no flexibility in a sleeping bag made of garbage, either in temperature capabilities or there is no way you can react defensively in seconds wrapped up in garbage. Melvin is caught up in this fantasy that, a) everyone is more stupid than he is, b) summer weather conditions will last 365 days of the year and c) once he goes to ground for the night nobody will be able to find him.

A) Melvin has little respect for others capabilities, he is wrong;
B) Weather patterns are continually changing, plus you might be forced out of your original AO;
C) Melvin plans to act as a marauder, which means that he has to stay near people to get resupplied, not be the only person in a 20 square mile area.
