I'm actually finding this an interesting topic to research. I realize with Melvin's original scenario minimal thought was given to research the scenario, but I think that if I were to adopt a scenario like that I would go with one of the longer (more expensive) touring kayaks. They are faster, easier to maneuver (less muscle strain) on both calm lakes or areas that can have white water, they are easier to recover from if you flip the boat, they have more water tight compartments that aid in floatation which would be important during inclement weather. The biggest reason that comes to mind is that depending which kayak you choose the touring kayaks can handle anything from 325- 400 pounds total, this includes the individuals weight. Think of the possibility of doubling or tripling the amount of food you can bring with you if you decide to go with the light weight dehydrated stuff. With the Mississippi river being 2,300+ miles long, that could provide a lot more flexibility to the trip.

So Melvin, looking for your input! Are you located near a body of water currently where you could utilize a boat, be it rubber raft or kayak?
