Your Guard Dog

A guard dog is the simplest and most reliable kind of alarm that you can have. Problem is, how do you teach them not to bark but to just signal you.

Well, there are two answers. Gunkid's is to have a surgically debarked chihuahua. His reasoning is that he can carry it in his pack and it won't eat very much. Also the reason for the chihuahua is because he is scared to death of dogs - large ones - but he hates all dogs.

My answer is the opposite. A good Shep, Dobe, Boxer or even a Lab makes a great guard dog. Large, highly intelligent, protective and warm in winter. They can carry their own food and eating/drinking bowls.

How to keep them from barking? You need someone to help but you just get the intruder (outside or away from you) to do something that will make them want to bark. You as master correct the dog and tell him not to bark. They will get the message and will start to growl. You then teach "low growl" or "quietly". If your dog has a brain, it will learn.

The training requires more time and method than I've mentioned but a professional trainer should be able to get the result pretty quickly.

There is no reason not to have a dog partner if you want one.

My apologies if I haven't mentioned your favorite breed. There are so many good ones that can do the job.

I would want a dog of at least seventy pounds, with a coat of fur appropriate for the expected area of operation.

A cross between a Pit Bull and a Shepard would be really good.

Why a mixed breed? Mixed breed dogs can be smarter than either of the parent breeds. Also they aren't as predisposed to some of the diseases and conditions that pure bred dogs are.

Interesting side note, my dog doesn't know the command sic'em. Instead he responds to TARD, TARD. Which I think is appropriate.

yeah, takes about $5000 worth of training

and the dog can carry MAYBE enough food to last him amonth, but he'll just be a target for everybody's rifle. Chihuahua's will eat insects, fishheads and guts, need only an oz or 2 a day, intead of 1-2 LBS of meat a day, like the bigger dogs.

big dogs don't live long, and they get

get hip displacement. Basically, they are a luxury you can't afford for shtf. Their size means nothing against auto rifle armed people.

TARD:
The word isn't hip displacement, it is Hip Dysplacia, the deformation of the hip joint. Would you at least try to keep up with the conversation?

Would you try to say something literate for a change?

If you would have read my post, with comprehension, you would have read the following:

"Also they aren't as predisposed to some of the diseases and conditions that pure bred dogs are."

Would you like me to break the words down, into single syllable words, so that you can understand them? Sheesh what a MAROON!

TARD:
Your understanding of the Canine animal is so abysmally wrong, it makes me laugh.

If I had a guard dog, and if I were on the run (which, unlike you, I never will be) I will feed the dog just like I would feed myself.

You are so damned stupid Melvin, it is easy to see why you were nicknamed the TARD. It is a shame that your thinking ability is so horrendously perverted. And it is perverted.

I used to have a german shepherd/pitbull cross(black on brindle), and he was dumb as a post, but I was the man with the food. He only knew too tricks, smile he would pull the lips back but not growl. and he would let the local witness group/avon ladies make it to the porch then race them to the car. My property is posted no tresspassing/no soliciting so I do not have a lot of sympathy for them. H e did not growl, or bark but he would let me know if someone was out there in the dark and his color made him invisible.

Wow! Somebody really reached back into the closet. I think this was my first post here as SAV. A good dog makes an excellent companion w/wo shtf. No GK, they are not bullet proof but then can be trained to be sneaky and can give warning of danger long before your senses detect any. Too bad you never learned to properly use a dog - your life is much poorer without a canine friend.

I'm inclined to agree about the dog. Especially after the dismal failure of the "combat kitty" project, that did little more than piss off the cat....

I thought it might be the answer to the ninja chihuahua (debarked little dog) that melvin was touting for a while...

just messin with ya - I think a good dog is probably as valuable as any other piece of gear you can come up with...
