How to turn a 5.56 into a noisy 9mm...

Put a 4.75" barrel on it, and get a deafening fire-breather with a disappointing 400-450 ft/lbs.

Got an email from KAK, with their micro-barrels on sale. Do not understand those unless you want to run some uber-heavy-bullet subsonics thru it; in which case you'd still be better off with any of several other calibers. People are weird.

Personally can't see the requirement for something that short, may as well use a pistol!

Same here. I had a 10.5" AR about 25 years ago, and even with the 5.5" flash hider it was still brutal with noise & blast. Out of curiosity I checked the BBTI tests, and from a 5" barrel they only got 1861 fps with 55 grain fmj.

Basically neutered the 223/5.56 down to .22 mag rifle or 9mm+p pistol power levels; taking away most of what it's really capable of. Some calibers are extremely dependent on velocity for performance, and this approach robs that.

I've never seen any reason for less than a 10.5" barrel. Requires special forends and nobody makes a flashhider to make it look like it's the legal length, either.:-) never saw any point in less than 16" unless you're going to put a can on it. For the past 40 years, have seen no point of a longarm that didn't have a silencer, either. 10.5" will drive 60 grs to 2500 fps, no problem 830 ft lbs, same as a 4" .44 mag with 240 gr jhp's and the 223 softpoint doesn't waste 1/3 or more of its power on over-penetration of the man, either. Scoped, from the bipod, with a trigger job, anti-cant bubble level, free float tube, match bthp's, it'll pull head hits at 200m, no problem, as long as wind and mirage are minimal.

I've never considered the 10.5" barrel 223's blast to be all that much worse than that of the 20" barrel. They are all horrible without ear protection, but with muffs, all are ok.
