bet .22 ammo will get scarce, expensive again

because of this FL thing. anti's are hard at it.

Terry G 02-21-2018 06:41 AM

Why would that happen? What's the school tragedy got to do with .22 ammunition?

Garand 02-21-2018 07:20 AM

Melvin, you really need to explain this statement.

John in AR 02-21-2018 07:47 AM

I expect to see more of the "I'm destroying my AR15" silliness, like we saw yesterday.

Pure emotion-based idiocy; makes no more sense than people crushing their own cars after SUV sidewalk attacks or deciding to burn their planes after 9/11. Morons.

No idea what it has to do with .22 rimfire ammo though. (Not really worried one way or the other; that's why we stock up when things are plentiful and cheap. Right...?)

{edit - there are a lot of good .22 deals out there now. You can get it for less than a nickel a round online for normal HV stuff, and even less than 4 cents a round if you shop carefully and aren't picky. Seems like a good time to stock up if you need to. Frankly seems like a silly time to NOT stock up if you need to.}

John in AR 02-26-2018 06:54 AM

Fwiw, a lot of decent 22 stuff can still be had for less than a nickel per round.

From one of the vendors here - federal 36-grain hp bulk stuff; not top-tier, but still fine for most .22LR shooting. Only 4.3 cents per round, with free shipping if you spend $75:
https://armslocker.com/gun-deals/63513-federal-22lr-hp-36-grain-ammo-525-rounds-22-79-a.html

Walmart in-store in my area has remington thunderbolt for 4.4 cents.

Checked ammoseek over the weekend, and they showed 16 under 4 cents, and four at 3.5 cents or less. Still plenty of decent deals available for anyone wanting to stock up some. Next month or next year or five years from now, that may not be the case; but still plenty of opportunities currently.

boati 03-25-2018 04:42 PM

it disappered from Walmart here again. Dick's sporting goods has sold us out on mags and AR's, so they will soon be out of biz.

John in AR 03-26-2018 04:49 AM

Still plenty available, and still cheap. No telling what the future holds, but for now, still plenty of opportunity for good deals.

Out of curiosity I checked ammoseek this morning and they show 86 options at less than a nickel per round, 36 at less than 4.5 cents, and a half-dozen at less than 4 cents per round. Even with shipping costs, federal champion hp stuff is only 4.86 cents per round, total, delivered from Red River.

John in AR 03-26-2018 05:17 AM

Huh... What do you know; after replying in this thread, I see a sponsor ad on this very site for .22LR ammo from CCI for 3.99 cents with free shipping.

Yep. Definitely "scarce and expensive'...

For Mel, guns an ammo disappeared many years ago.

Yet the drive-by pontifications just keep-a-coming... :shrugs:

Genuine shame because he does have enough of a knowledge base to have a conversation, but unfortunately doesn't have enough emotional control to have one civilly.

We are paying $33.75 up here in Canada unfortunately

John in AR 04-02-2018 01:56 PM

Fyi, from a site sponsor. Another one for less than 4 cents per round including shipping: https://armslocker.com/gun-deals/64625-remington-thunderbolt-22-lr-40-gr-500-rnds-19-79-after-code-fs-over-25-a.html

Thunderbolt isn't 'top drawer' ammo, but it runs 100% in my 22/45, sig mosquito, and 10-22; and runs 90% even in the AA glock 26 conversion kit. Definitely usable stuff for playing or drills, which is almost all the shooting I do anymore.

Seems like a good time to be stocking up if anyone were short on supply...

Terry G 04-02-2018 02:10 PM

No way to tell if some shortage will happen again. I have enough .22 bulk to last a long , long time. I have been buying only High Velocity CCI, Golden Bullet, and Browning so that it works in everything I own. I have bought a lot of the CCI Quiet for my lever and bolt guns. .22's are cheap all over, no reason not to stock up on your favorite's.

John in AR 04-02-2018 03:26 PM
.22's are cheap all over, no reason not to stock up on your favorite's.
I do have my favorites, primarily minimags for maximum functional reliability in overall use and remington 38-grain subsonics for suppressed use in rifles. (Minimags are the only load I've tested that literally run 100%, every time, in every gun I've used them in.)

But for overall blasting/playing/drills/etc, the thunderbolts, federal bulk, and remington golden bullet all do plenty good for those uses. And they do it at half the price of minimags; agree completely on stocking up on bulk stuff.

Garand 04-02-2018 03:45 PM

Honestly, I don't think I shoot more than 1 Federal bulk pack of 525 per year on average. I should be good for about 5 years, unless things change?

John in AR 04-09-2018 03:38 PM

Fwiw, Federal copper-plated hollowpoints @ 4.0 cents, including shipping. In our area (with a 9.125% sales tax rate), that's the equivalent of 3.66 cents per round. For plated, usa-made stuff, that's very good.

https://armslocker.com/gun-deals/64793-federal-premium-byob-22-lr-36-gr-cphp-1-100-rds-44-49-shipped-w-coupon.html

As cheap as things are right now and as ugly as things are politically, it would be silly imo to not have "too much" on hand.

Deaf Smith 05-14-2018 07:42 PM

I've got more .22 ammo than I need. Lucked into some of those Remington 1400 buckets cheep this year. $60 each. I think the gent was a prepper that needed $$. His loss, my gain. And I doubt the Florida thing will change anyone's opinion. Just way to much bungling all the way up the line.
bet .22 ammo will get scarce, expensive again because of this FL thing...
And again, a drive-by pontification that's not only wrong, but a full 180-degrees wrong. The "Florida thing" was almost six months ago now, and .22 ammo prices have dropped, and is in stock everywhere; it's not gotten expensive or scarce.

That's the problem with reflexive, emotion-based outbursts; they're reflexive and emotion-based.

John in AR 07-31-2018 08:55 AM

Fwiw, all angry rhetoric aside, came across a deal today I thought I'd share. Federal plated hollowpoint stuff for less than 3.8 cents per round.

https://www.foundry35.com/products/federal-745-champion-22-lr-copper-plated-hollow-point-36-gr-525box10case?variant=12191236915284

When you factor in shipping at only $12.99 for 15 bulk packs, and the fact that there's no sales tax, it works out to the equivalent of paying just 3.59 cents per round (before sales tax) locally. Some awfully good bargains available today...

It's not the absolute best stuff in the world, but it's still very good; running 100% in most of my guns. Basically it runs 100% in every rifle I've tried it in, as well as 100% in the Ciener unit, the dedicated AR22 pistol, the .22/45 and the old ruger Mk2. It does have some issues in the glock 19 & 26 conversion kits and the sig mosquito; running 90%, 77%, and 83% respectively (stovepipes & failures to eject mostly). But being that it's copper plated which helps reduce crap buildup in the suppressors, and it works 100% of the time in every 22 I own except one pistol and two conversion kits, at less than 4 cents per round I'll take it with no reservations at all.

John in AR 08-20-2018 11:33 AM

Even lower - Federal copper-plated 36 grain HP, for only 3.2 cents per round.
