.338-08 pressures compared to .308
 

The more I read about the .338-08 the more I want to build up a nice carbine chambered for it. I suppose since it is a wildcat I'm going to have to handload anyway but I'd like to know how drastically the wider case mouth effects chamber pressure compared to the .308.

Whatever happened with the .338-Federal round?

I thought it was about the same thing??

It is but as I understand it almost nothing is chambered for it. Besides, I really want to build something up for it, I have something specific in mind.

Assuming optimal powders being used in both cases, you should be able to get 10% more muzzle energy in the 338/08 (338 Fed) at the same pressure level. However, since you can use much heavier bullets with the 338/08 (up to 250gr), you can get much more power. It should make you an excellent carbine for all non-dangerous North American big game. :)

I've been talking about building one of these for about 10 years...ever sincve a friend built a 338-06.

I figured a 358 necked down to .338 would be a nice bear / elk gun. short action, be easy handling and would pack a good wallop.

'excuse-me' ,,,gang! although, minus the speed, the 45-70 'kilt' ALL NON-DANGEROUS/dangerous ,,,,VARMINTS!!!.

no brass if he uses 358 win brass , its neck down. if he is uses 308 win brass its neck up. or have i been incorrectly necking down 378 weatherby brass to 30-378, meaning i need to neck it up to 30 cal. i'm confused now brass. :cool:
