Garand shared the Thompson firing video, and I started thinking about the full automatic weapons I have fired. The head honcho was definitely the M-2 Browning .50. When you pressed those butterfly triggers it was a real experience. Fired from a sandbagged position or a "Hard Truck" you knew you were reaching out with some major hurt. (PIA humping ammo though, 200 rounds= 75 lbs.) The sub-gun I liked a lot was the 9MM Swedish K. I only got to fire it a couple of times, but it was sweet. If I was going to pick my favorite though, it would be the H&K MP5. Very controllable and rifle like accuracy. I never got to fire a suppressed one, though. The M-14 fired on full auto was something you didn't forget. After the second shot you were anti-aircraft. They tried to tame it with a heavier barrel and a different stock, but it never worked out. The funniest one was an M-2 Carbine that actually caught fire after a few 30 round magazines. Anyway, if you feel like sharing I would like to hear.

I haven't shot a ton of full auto stuff, but a few. Standard Amy stuff; M16, M60, and M2. American 180 rimfire was a lot of fun, a friend's Thompson was neat from a history/nostalgia perspective, and the most fun one by far was an MP5-K with side-folding stock. If I were given the chance to "pick one for free and it's mine to keep", it would be the MP5-K without question. Small, reliable, and in a caliber that I really like. |

A good one to ask would be FordPerfect, he is partial to the M60, was a door gunner in VietNam. Like to hear some of his stories. I like the 50, the M2 carbine an used the grease gun in Nam. That M14 was a little hard to control, handful for sure. M16 is fun. Conversion unit makes it even more so. |

I carried the Canadian C1 SMG (licenced copy of Sterling L2A3) for 2 1/2 years, I have a soft spot for it, as well as the Sten, MP40 & Thompson. My down right favorite though is the Danish Madsen M1950 SMG.

I used an M60 while in Vietnam, but the M249 (SAW) would probably be a better choice, if I had to carry it.. |

even the SAW, at 19 lbs, with 200 rd belt/drum weighing in at 7 lbs, you aint gonna be in business long. Need every man in a squad to carry a drum for you, your assistant gunner carrying a couple of ammo cans and you still wont hold out very long. full auto just does too much missing.

I can understand why the military uses it, but I believe that NOT having full-auto helps make me a better shooter.

In order to accommodate those of us who are true AirSoft commandos, there is even an AirSoft version of the M249 as per the attached advertisement.. The weight is listed as only 13.5 pounds.. I'm certain that would be hard to pass up such a fierce-looking weapon for only $285.00.. |

I personally have pretty much no desire for anything full-auto, but part of that is that I have to buy or make my own ammo. In force-on-force simunitions training, I've had guys and groups 'kill' me in situations where full-auto fire absolutely worked to their advantage. |

only one that ever interested me was the 10 9mm smg's that I made and sold for over 2k each in today's money.ATF bought five of them and then, when they raided my shop, I was long gone. they had K9's, chopper, swat team, everything except john and his gear, cause i'd moved out the night before the ATF deal. But the guys from whom I rented the barn didn't know that I'd left. they were trying to steal my guns, saying that they'd been stolen. They wanted me to just hand over all 6 of my silenced smgs, but I said, no, one first, when I get the money, then 2, when I get my money, then the final 3. They bitched, but it went my way. one smg came back, said not enough money, but that was done to justify the search warrant. A friend was driving a van around the block, with a beeper. 1986. My stuff was in his storage. When I got the last of the money, he picked me up. They raided the place like 2 weeks later. the guys that I'd rented from were lying to the feds about me still being there, as those guys sought to find me, to save their asses by sellling me out, of course. the atf agents were lying to their bosses about having me under 24-7 surveillance

I never got to shoot them without the silencer, but with it on, they'd keep a really long burst on a 55 gal drum at 25 yds. If I had it do to over again, they'd be built in.22lr, using the 50 rd 1022 drums. and I'd use rectangular tubing for the receiver, with a guide rod for the recoil spring. the Sten design of recoil spring was a custom job for me to have made, doubled the cost of making the gun. I used M16 pistol grips, 3" long chunks of Uzi barrel, and Sten mags. The lockwork is extremely simple for a blowback, open bolt firing smg. Just a trigger and a "rocker" sear that protudes up and catches the bolt at the shoulder of the 2 diameter bolt. I cut a slot in the side of the front half of the bolt, hardened a hunk of steel and plug-welded it into the side of the receiver

the belt feds bring stupid prices and are great investments. they average 20% per year increase in price. that's a helluva return on your investment, but you have to sell the gun to take your profit and what ELSE can give you that sort of ROI? fixed supply of them, due to 1986 law, and more demand for them every year, AND they rent them out to shooters.

i converted an HK carbine, a mac 10 9mm and about a dozen tec 9's, silenced them, too. didn't get to shoot them much at all before traded them for coke. about an oz each, which was $1500 at the time, about 6k in today's money. the shorty's fired way too fast, the 30 rd mag would be empty in 1.5 seconds. keeping them on a man's chest was strictly a 5 yd proposition. The HK did much better, but was heavy and really expensive.

The two SMGs ,of all the pistol caliber squirt guns I shot over the years that I liked the best;were the PPSh41 and the PPS43. The former was great with the 35 round mags, but the drums needed to be match to the gun. VERY high rate of fire... I mean " get the Tactical Wheelbarrow to carry all the ammo you'll need for the next house-to -house work". The Sudayev was easier to tap out short bursts,as well as being more compact. Both were reliable and had an impressive reach due to the chambering. Stepping up? Belt feed? PKM/Pechneg variant. Magazine fed? I like AK'S. Yeah,I know-I'm a creature of habit and questionable character. |
