Cooper's 'general rifle" skills eval
had shots to 500 yds. Funny thing, out to 300 yds, the targets were 10" gongs, but at longer ranges, they were 20". Guess that means you only shoot at meese (mooses) at ranges beyond 300yds. :-) Dunno why a man would suddenly be a larger target? Jeff said that the reason for IPSC's choosing a 10" mark was to simulate a man's chest-vitals for handgun work, and because it simulates a head on prone man for rifle matches. I was on the target committee at the formation of IPSC and rifle shooting was very much on the mind of many at the Columbia Conference. They "thought" we'd taken pistol shooting very nearly to the penultimate, with 8 second, open wear El prezidentes. Now the top times are very nearly 4 seconds. :-) Not with the sort of gear we were using in 1976, of course, but already by 1978, some of us were cracking 5.0 seconds, with that same gear.
