Mystery Ammo

Years ago I had a student who was having a lot of trouble with the handgun qualification. I liked the guy and worked with him a couple of times own my own time and got him through the course. A couple of weeks later he asked me if I would some ammunition that his Dad had bought before he passed away. He wasn't sure of the caliber, but it was in a "Big Can." Naturally I said yes. I forgot about it until just thus morning when I was cleaning the basement. The can say's MADE IN RUSSIA 7.62 X 39MM Non-Corrosive 640 RDS. Okay, surplus ammunition is common as dirt, but in ENGLISH? Non-Corrosive? It came with a large can opener. Any Ideas?

Large can opener, sure sound like former Warsaw Pact ammo. Most former Warsaw Pact ammo I have seen in the past decade has had some English writing as a lot of it is being manufactured to bring foreign currency into those countries to keep their economies a float.

I saw ads for such in gun mags and shotgun news, not that long ago.

Early commercial (or re branded military).

I agree with gripper and probably paper wrapped or that generic looking white boxed stuff if you open the can.

If it's the vintage I think it is.

what diff, anyway? if it's no longer available, it's not. and if you really care about ammo prices, why dont you get a dillon progressive loader?

It is produced in a Russian government arsenal for foreign public sale to produce foreign currency. That is why the only thing changed is the lettering.

Interesting. Maybe I'll sell the can as is. I haven't needed it so far.
