Weight of miltary rifle, ammo

is a huge issue. Such guns are carried a lot more than they are fired, and they are fired a lot more than they are successful in hitting anything. That is the main reason that the 308 was abandoned by every one of the world's major militaries.

The reason that 7.62x 39 ammo is so cheap is that even China is abandoning it, in favor of the much lighter, .20 AK round. The individual survivalist has a much greater problem of carrying ammo, and resupply than does any military troop. So the guys who choose 308 as their shtf rifle will soon be forced to switch to 223, or have nothing but a .22lr.
