Nice! I like that boot knife to the left of the sub-hilt design.
fraid I don't know what a sub hilt is. I just love drop points, stag handles, and sealed bolsters. There was a guy, Lowell? Dowell? who started with half inch thick billets and ground down the blade and the areas for the handle slabs, leaving the cap and hilt full thickness, a one pc sort of deal. Very similar and very beautiful
[QUOTE=nikto;221812]fraid I don't know what a sub hilt is.
Basically a finger grip on the other side of the index finger from the guard, to give something to pull against just as the guard gives something to push against.
More subtle example:
I can see the benefit from a grip perspective, but it's not for me personally; especially the more extreme styles on some sheath knives. I like a larger pommel on a large grip to accomplish pretty much the same thing.
I agree. The subtle example is about all that I ever preferred. I see the utility in a point forward or saber Grip,but when I'd switch to an outboard/reverse grip, it gets a bit awkward for me. Beautiful work, though.
The large pommel I was describing:
The guard keeps your hand where it should be when pushing, and the large pommel does the same thing when pulling. It's one of the reasons I like the Marbles Ideal so much.
Fwiw, my second-favorite woods knife. Has a minor sub-hilt grip, but not as positive as the Ideal's pommel. But the steel is awfully good on it; it's a Fallkniven SK-6, blade is VG-10 outer layers, sandwiched around a cobalt center. It's a phenomenal knife.
I didn't like the goofy black sheath it came in, so I had SavageMade sheaths make one up for me, that carries an EZE-Lap hone in a thin pocket on the back. Great for resharpening in the field:
