but realistically valuable defensive handguns CAN be intriquing, entertaining, etc. So why not become skilled at the handgun's basic role (ie, superfast deployment from concealment, sub 5 yds, vs 1-2 attackers. ? THEN you can diddle around with the longer distances, slower stuff, hunting, plinking, etc? Combat competition can be helpful, IF the ranges, target sizes and number of targets per stage are kept realistic. Then the stress of peer pressure can reveal weak spots in your gun handling, and perhaps even guide you to better gear, techniques, even tactics.

THEN you can monkey-thrust around with jokes like SA revolvers, derringers, long range metalic silohuette shooting, PPC, BE and the like, without doing harm to your defensive ability.

why can't you have fun becoming more and more swift at hitting at realistic stuff, instead of pretending that you can make the handgun fulfill the role of the rifle? The latter is impossible, with the possible exception of going MUCH slower than would be needed to get the hit with the rifle.

I fully appreciate the fun and value of having a handgun for pests and entertainment around the ranch and on hikes, but a silenced .22 pocket gun is best for that. When you miss, the critter just sits there and you get to try again. Or the bird, etc, takes off, but others just sit there. The noise of firing is a major pita. I was made aware of this as a kid, hunting on posted land. :) East of the mississippi, virtually ALL land is posted. This handicap is also why I so value having a hunting gun that's concealable. Not having to have the gun out in the open, freezing my fingers, is nice, too. I've taken literally a ton of critters at sub 20 yds, well within the range of an accurate handgun

quite often, the only marks seen all day (legal to shoot at) are birds, and missing them is no big deal, IF the gun is quiet and mostly kept out of sight. Frogs, snakes, mud turtles, all are common marks, but not worth making noise over, much less the cost of a centerfire rd. A really good silencer renders a .22 hg little more noisy than a soft handclap, if you let the slide cycle. if u do not, it can be literally as quiet as a BB gun.
