at 6.7" x 5" and 25 ozs, it's no pocket gun and as a belt gun, it's feeble. it's got no .22 conversion unit and ammo for 9x18 is no longer cheap. So what's to be preferred about it, over a used PF9 keltec, for $200 or less? Sure, the keltec might fall apart if you shoot it a lot, but if you can afford to shoot it, you can also afford more gun than the Mak. Like a used, $400 6"x 4.5" 15 oz Sig P938 or Kahr CM9. With the pocket 9mm's , you can have twice the power of the mak, along with AP performance. You can fire the low cost, GI 9mm rd and luminous sights You can have a .22 unit (sig, kahr or Ruger LC9) and the gun will fit in a front pants pocket holster, which the Makarov can't do.

If you're going to lug around a belt gun, why not a $350 Star BM compact 9m? 7"x5" and 28 ozs, all steel, nice trigger pull and sights, too. Very controlable and accurate. youtube vids about it.

I disagree. I find it slim enough to carry and stow, big enough to hang on to and shoot well under stress. It's accurate, reliable; and with the Wolff Gunsprings set its capable of handling fairly hot loadings without issue.
Additionally, I've never had trouble scaring up bulk lots of a wide range of ammo. Some of its reloadable. Ive never felt the need for a .22LR conversion unit but I HAVE run across tools and caliber conversions(.380,.32 NAA; and one .32ACP -the last being a " one off").

the ignorant often think its great, but its DA triggerpull sucks and it's a feeble load, since it's a blowback. No way to fix it. It's WAY too heavy and bulky for having only 200 ft lbs of power. Only thing it's got going for it is the $200 price and maybe the alloy frame of the hungarian version. you're WAY ahead to spend another $100 to get a star BM 9mm compact.

I've an EG and a Bulgarian Circle 10 that would prove you wrong on the DA trigger as well as the accuracy. With the ($22.50 including shipping) heavier recoil springs from Wolff Gunsprings) although frankly I had no wear from the original springs with military ball) they both safely fire, feed and extract-all without wear/damage- a wide range of ammo;ranging from LVE Ball to hot(115 grain hardcast flat point ammo loaded beyond 1100fps)Buffalo Bore&Underwood ammo. Is it a +P+ 124 grain 9x19 or a 1650fps+ 7.62x25( which I also run)? Nope...but as far as giving pause those who would harm me or mine.

I really like the Makarov and it's cousin the CZ 82. Often carried as a back up gun. It's got a bit more punch than a .380 and with proper bullets certainly adequate for CCW. As far as a .22 unit, do you need one? Why for this pistol? If you want an understudy buy a Bersa T22. .22 units are great for the larger models but for pocket guns I don't see the need. As an aside, E.G. Mak's are going way up in price. I'd grab one while you can.

Bersas are underappreciated little gems. I'd like to see a steel framed offering from them,compact/service sized.
I never got around to acquiring a CZ82, and would love to.
Wild idea: That .380 1911? I'm assuming it's a locked breech like its full sized brother? Would a 9x18 conversion be feasible?

Truth to tell, I like the CZ82 better than the Makarov. Better trigger and 4 extra shots jn the magazine. I bought several when they were $200,00 like new new w/holster and extra magazine.

Funnily perhaps, 9x18 ammo is one of the cheapest calibers to be had nowadays. Still can be had for around 35 cents per round. I only know because I took a bunch of it to sell to a local gunshop recently & looked it up beforehand.

And "what's to be preferred about it over a keltec"..? Mainly that it's not a keltec. I've had two P32's and a Sub2000, and every one of them sucked. Bad.

Melvin has probably never been near a Makarov or a CZ 82, he's certainly never handled one or shot one. .22 Unit for everything is mandatory of course. Those big bullet's are so LOUD!
