I remember that after we set up IPSC at the Columbia Conference, Jeff went on to teach a basic class in Ohio, staying at Hack's place. Hack later said that Cooper had all the personality of an armpit. I rode out to the first IPSC nationals in Golden Colorado with Bill. and raul walters tried to get me tossed in jail over carrying a LW commander in the designated" Match hotel". But the cops came to find out that Jeff had cleared it with the management for us to CCW at the hotel He advocated always carrying and he knew that quite a few of us did so as a matter of routine (and pride). Raul was an asshole, but he wasn't smart enough to come up with all his cheating ways on his own. He got the ideas from Dick Thomas.

In 1978, I stayed with Bill at his house for a few days and shot the match he hosted. I wowed everyone in practice the day before and exhausted myself. The peer pressure of the match had me shaking and flinching badly the next day. Bill had warned me about not doing all my good shooting in practice. I"d fired like 600 rds that Saturday. I met Harry Claflin at that match and later stayed at harry's pasture "range", shooting 24,000 rds of my .45 reloads in 6 weeks. Bill came up one day to practice an aasault course that I had set up. We were going to shoot it at the 79 world shoot in S Africa. I broke a collet barrel bushing and Harry drove me all the way to Bill's place. Bill let me sort thru a big box of collet bushings, finding one that fit just right. I did so and later shot several 5 shot 2.5" groups at 50 yds, from prone with that gun and my Star-reloaded, cast bullet ammo. One of them had a cloverleaf in it. All the other accurizing done on 1911's is the bunk, If the barrel bushing fits the barrel and the slide as it should, you can clean the 50 yd slowfire bullseye match with it, no problem. I eventually put a dozen series 80 1911 colts on my lee machine rest and with match jswc ammo, every last one of them would group 3" or better at 50 yds for 5 shots. The 10 ring is 3.5" wide and if you 'nick" that ring, you score a 10. So, center to center of the bullet holes (.45) all the gun has to do is group 4", and actually and it's capable of a perfect score. 2/3rds of the match are .22 and centerfire, wich many shot with the blowback .38 gold cup, and the 50 yd stage is just 1/3rd of the match. 2/3rds of the rds are fired at 25 yds. The reality is that if you stay in the 9 ring with the .45 slow fire, and clean everything else with the other guns, you'll win the overal match at the very highest levels. That means that you can win with a gun that only groups 5", If YOU can always group 5". So the 1911 that "only" groups 3" at 50 yds is easily capable of winning the match for you. Forget the $1000 accurization charge and spend that money instead on reloading components. You'll be way ahead.

To be fair, 2020 has had a lot of craziness, so I wouldn’t fault someone for not doing much this year.

John, tell us about any matches from this millennium...

Even though we had to stay within our province this year and matches were banned by the Provincial Health Authority due to size of attendance, my wife and I still managed to attend 5x 1/2 day "Practices" & 2x 3 day "Practices" where the total participants were lower than the amount designated by the province also wearing masks when required at the loading & unloading tables. Plus I attended at least 3 others where my wife had a prior commitment. Normally I build 3,300 rds of .38 Special for my wife for annual matches. At the end of season this year, there was still 2,300 rds left.
