wax loads, primer only, will kill snakes
to 10 ft or so, given head shots. Better than birdshot in most handguns, actually. With plastic bullets, loaded over just a primer, the .45 will take pigeons to almost 30 ft. Wax bullets do MUCH better in cold weather. I had one go thru my bro's fairing on his bike. cost me $80, back in 1980. about 5x that much in today's money!. They had just splattered on it in warm weather. They will raise blood blisters on you the size of the end of your thumb, so they are NOT a toy. They are pretty quiet, about like a mild handclap. 9mm or .38 dont do nearly as well, due to the smaller primer (I guess).

For wax ,I used to drill out the primer pockets on 38 spl. cases, gave them a little more power. Can't use for lead again after that so keep them apart. 45 acp did not make much difference. Shot tons on them out of model 19 down in basement. Had to crank rear sight way up. Might get some parriffin today at store, geese don't want to leave my yard, should sting them enough so they get the idea. Darn things have ate most of my grass already down by the water. They are not afraid of me with a slingshot or bb gun, that don't hurt them. Did hit one in the head with slingshot one time, lucky shot! Thought I killed him but after a few minutes he got up an shook his head an started eating. Miserable things to have around, even dog has given up chasing them. Bottle rockets, firecrackers, nothing works. Squirrels get taken care of with cb caps or standard vecolicty shorts. Those damm tree rats have ate wiring out of cars, tore up inside of boats, chewed the brake line on my truck twice, flex one going to wheels. Possums get trapped an given a long drink after eating all the cat food in trap.

can't use the CB's on the geese? neck, right at topof chest, eaiest mark.

BigBassMan 03-31-2016 07:53 AM

They are protected, just want to sting them an make them move to a neighbors yard. An if you shoot one an it flops, 50 others come see what is going on.

how would you know THAT? :-) Couple of really predatory dogs should handle it ok, I'd think?

Fwiw, I have some .45LC brass that's been modifed so they use 209 shotgun primers and push-in wax bullets; apparently cowboy fast-draw competitors use them. I haven't chrono'ed them, but out of curiosity, did pop a sheet of 3/4" plywood at 12-15 feet. It was cabinet-grade (hard) plywood; don't recall if it was oak or maple.

I was very surprised that it left a crater in the plywood around 1/16" of an inch deep or so. For taking birds & other small game close, up they'd be more than adequate. For running off even dog-size critters without killing them, they'd probably be more than adequate, too.

plastic .45 bullets and a primer MIGHT hit geese hard enough to run them off. I"d say that an electric fence might work, too. Pump up pellet pistol is probably the answer. enough pumps to REALLY get noticed, but not enough to cause harm. or a really slow acting poison of some sort. maybe use lead bb's instead of the wasp wasted pellets?

BigBassMan 03-31-2016 05:44 PM

As per bylaws, fences are not allowed. Some have tried but geese are not stopped by them. Wax loads are next project.
Made the rounds to a couple shops today, bought a 586 an have a call in about a 28 an a PPKs, also got a line on 30 some long guns from a estate. Still thinking on a 586 in Midnight Black.
I know, can't put in pocket or can. Prices on them old Smiths are going up so I will buy when find PLUS THEY MAKE GOOD SHOOTERS!

SV 22s out of an ar conversion unit makes no noise, plenty of springs in stock so just clipped two coils off one to make it function, 3x9 scope, lots of tree rats!

nikto 03-31-2016 06:25 PM

hope you got plenty of .22 laid away before things got stupid?

BigBassMan 03-31-2016 06:44 PM

Plenty. It is starting to show up again, all shops around here are loaded with all types.

nikto 03-31-2016 06:47 PM

can you buy it in bulk yet, 100k or so rds at a time? what do prices look like? Best I see online, delivered, is 10c a shot. If it gets back down to 6c a rd, wifey will buy 100k rds. can't lose (enough to matter any) at that price! and could easily triple her money in a year, too, if the wrong person wins the presidency and too many of the wrong congress critters get into office.

BigBassMan 03-31-2016 07:14 PM

Never priced any today, was not interested. Going to make more rounds tomorrow, will check at Litchfield.

nikto 03-31-2016 08:58 PM
