On "old guys"... At our previous church, we had annual "Guys Retreats" where 12-15 of us old guys would take 40-50 teenagers on a three-day campout. Would teach them how to read a compass, start a fire, tell rough direction via the sun, etc. Also had ranges set up for archery, shotgun, rifle, and pistol where the kids were divided into teams and competed for points.

Even though back then I was only in my 40's, to those high-school kids, I was "old". And on those campouts every year, one thing I always told the young guys was that when you see an old man out in public, you know at least one thing about him. You may not know his name, may not know anything about his family, you may not know if he even speaks english. But you know that nobody has managed to kill him yet; and that says something right there.

And personally speaking, as an even older guy now, I can appreciate what Granny said one time when seeing a politician arrested for accepting bribes. She was only in her 80's at the time (she'll be 98 in a couple weeks), and when she saw him in cuffs she commented on politicians, "they all need killin. A life sentence just don't mean what it used to." And that's true for mature adults - every year, fear of death just doesn't mean what it used to. I still fully intend to go out kicking & screaming, but fact is, he's coming for all of us and every day he's simply a little closer than the day before.

On Marines, I thought USMC was 'Uncle Sam's Misguided Children'...

I really have great respect for the Marines but like to have fun with them.
Here is a pic of two of them atop the Iwo Jima memorial in the 60s, in the snow, had to be a lot of booze involved. One is FordPerfect.
My late neighbor was at Iwo when the flag was raised, I did not know that till after he was gone.

Same here. I respect most veterans of the various services. (Air Force, I confess I'm not completely sure of. When I was young, I debated going into the Air Force, but I went into the military instead... )

And in the spirit of 'equal time', I had a Marine tell me that they always thought of ARMY as an acronym for "Aren't Real Marines Yet"...

He would have to stop three times to kick at a dog or shoot a groundhog.
