cooking over wood fire is a pita

it ties you down for an hour or more. The only way to reduce that time is boil the food. otherwise, you have to wait for the wood to burn down to a consistent bed of coals. If you try to cook on flames, roasting, frying, etc, what you get is burned outsides and raw insides. you'll have to "tend" that food constantly, slicing off the cooked outer layers every few minutes. This sort of crap renders you unable to do much of anything else. That's why you see all the time-jumps on youtube vids of such cooking. Better have cordage to make, nets to fashion, etc, as you sit by the fire, cooking. There were good reasons why people went to coal, to stoves, to gas, to electricity for cooking, as soon as they were able! :-)
