.308 Tungsten Core Bullets

Just bid on 200 Tungsten Core bullets.

These are going to be interesting for sure.

50$ for 200 isnt bad at all.

How fast should I load these for maximum anti-armor effectiveness? Anyone have some resources? Any help is most appreciated.

I need to weigh them when they get here. Seller didnt specify. From the pics, the things looked brand new.

Interesting, I have never seen anything other than .50. READ the attached link.

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't .308 one of the calibers ATF, in their wonderful wisdom, considers to be pistol ammo?

And if so, putting said .30 cal projectiles into a loaded .308 cartridge could be considered a major FAUX PAS? (big no-no)

Just wondering out loud about the implications...

Not quite... .308 is considered a pistol cartridge which means that you may not buy loaded AP, manufacture AP bullets for it, or sell it. There is a slight distinction of reloading for personal use though. Just don't do anything stupid with the ammo.

Oh, and there is a guy at the Richmond Va shows all the time that has .308 steel core AP heads for sale $10 per 100. I'll get his info at the next show and post it if you guys want to get a really good deal.

FXDS, those arent the bullets nor the seller I got it from. I ordered from "gunner chris" on gunbroker. Thanks for the heads up though, the more I read about how that guy is scamming you and Rich the more it irritates me. If someone did that to me Id own their entire life before you could say "lawsuit"; ommercial fraud being just about the only thing Id sue over.

Many of you bring up the legality. Its going in a 300 RUM, so even if you couldnt put tips in handloads (which you can) it most likely wouldnt apply to me.

Hard Rock, Id love info on that guy if you see him again.

Garand, nice link. However, the issues are specifically pertaining to SLAP rounds, the tips I got are solid tungsten cored with copper jackets, no sabot.

EDIT TO ADD

After some more look at that article, it is shown that the penetrator is moving at around 3900 FPS. The hottest I can load the RUM is something like 3650 with a 180 gr projectile at the hottest, and probly unreachable. 3650 with a 160 would be more in the ballpark, once again. I have to weigh the things when they get here. For around 500 yards, what is a realistic estimate of my projected rounds capability?

I think a BUNCH of those .308 AP projectiles were brought in from Isreal years ago. They were all over the place for sale, then they dried up real quick. Pretty hard to find them these days, it seems. Still seem to be a lot of the AP projectiles pulled from 30-06 ammo available, however.

Just watch that some people don't try to con you with copper washed steel jacketed stuff instead of REAL AP cored projectiles. Learn how to tell the difference in how a magnet sticks to them.
