working at a nursery near Chatham

landscaping 10 hours a day, wrassling 300+ lb rootballs, shovel and wheelbarrow work, STILL took me 2 months to work up to walking to Hillsboro and back to Litchfield, in one day. Took almost 10 hours, with 40 lbs of Kelty Redwing pack and sandbags. YOu're kidding yourself about what you can backpack, if you don't do it for several hours a week, almost every week. Your feet will blister badly, despite the ideal footwear, despite the vasoline and the moleskin. Nothing substitutes for actually doing it and hardening your body to it.

Very true; true of most things, actually. I have to consciously work on fitness nowadays. It certainly doesn't come as easily as it used to.
