The Car-15 another oops for Colt?

These things were popular as anything back in the Viet Nam War, Short, 11.5 barrel, telescoping stock, long flash suppressor, just sexy looking as hell. Down side was they didn't work very well. The Army dumped them in 1975. I was discussing weapons we had used with a Special Forces Veteran and he confirmed that every in his unit wanted one, then wanted their regular M-16A-1's back. He told me he had tried several, cleaning them "like I was going to stand guard at the Arlington National Cemetery" and still they would malfunction on semi and full auto. They never did get the bugs worked out. You could spot a new Officer in Viet Nam that hadn't been in combat by his new boots and the fact he was carrying a CAR-15.

Short gas system, insufficient to make the buffer assembly actually work efficiently. Over gassed/ran hot and therefore dirty,especially given the early teething problems of the McNamara rush to field the original M16 without the chrome bore, too high a rate if fire and powder that burned with that much residue.
Even with my bias against the 5.56 in a shorter than 18 inch barrel, I concede that the M4/M4A1 is greatly improved over the CAR15.

The 16" car15's largely work fine, and are my primary defensive long arm. I had one of the 10.5" ones with 5.5" flash hider and it was a piece of garbage.

Iirc, the 10.5" was called the xm177 and the 16" was the car15; but that may not be universally applied by all mfr's.

Like the 16in. the best. also the 20in. Shot a friends 10 1/2in. an hated it, never worked right. He finally traded it off. Never any problems with my 16 in. any of them.

I have an Armalite M15A4, built in 2000, with a 14.5" barrel which works flawlessly if I have done my part. Unfortunately I had to buy another dedicated upper for it with a 16" barrel if I want to bring it to the states.

While visually and functionally similar, the CAR-15 proper (and of the time) is substantially different than the subcarbines in service and premium yet standards-derived modern commercial units now. There are tens of readily notable small dimensional differences in addition to major material and material condition revisions.

The majority of XM177's were 11.5" barrels, IIRC.

Most commercial so-called "Mil-Spec" guns use predominately M16A1 dimensions and materials, with market driven substitutions reflecting the current spec mostly in materials, and they are made without meaningful quality assurance and weak quality control. Hybrids of what people are told second hand, know, can readily find, and what corporate allows on behalf of the bottom line, but not proper.
