If I have a gun AIMED at a knife wielder

who's 7 yds away, and he charges me, I am blowing one right over his head when he closes to about 10 ft, and then he's getting a couple in his chest as he takes his next 1-2 steps, and then I'll brain him as I front kick his chest. He might get a slash on my leg, in the 1x in 20 times that a pair of MY loads don't drop him. Since I dont expecet to be charged by a knife or club wielder more than 1-2x in my life (when he can SEE the gun) I consider a 1 in 20 failure ratio to be acceptable. :-) Wouldn't hang around for the cops, anyway, much less the service of notice of a lawsuit.

I have way too much experience and respect for sharp steel to " blow one over his head"... attack me with a knife and my " warning shots" will be a vertical string from his/ her lower abs all the way up to the chin...trust me, I won't miss deliberately.

Warning shots are for people who watch too much movies or TV.

Or complete well never mind.

Also never bring a knife to a gun fight.

On the flip side don't allow any stranger or aggressor to get too close to you.

Situational awareness and don't just turn it off in a crowd or familiar location.

misses, especially with magnum loads, right past the head, have changed a LOT of minds and if you hit somebody with a bullet, it's going to cost you at LEAST $50,000 to stay out of prison and not be suied out of every $ that you ever make. When you can hit 6x per second, like any highly skilled man can, using an SA auto, there's no need to panic about a mere knife guy (that far away). Not if you've got really effective loads in your pistol.

John, I can understand that but anymore there are a lot of dudes out there jacked up on crazy stuff like snorting bath salts, doctored mary jane , crack, synthetic pot like "Spice" that's often worse than just plain pot and can have the opposite effect on the body. Then there's all the different meth formulas out there too.
One they have no common sense the average old mugger might have and two their nervous system is fried from whatever crap they ingest.
They could be "dead" and not know it short of a good CNS hit.

smashed down is smashed down, tho. have you ever had a shorty 223 fired right past your ear, from 10 ft away? that's what my pistol loads sound and feel like. When you hit somebody with a bullet, and are going thru what zim did, you'll WiSH that you'd given yourself the option of having the guy just stop or veer off. I've HAD a fat man charge me with a crescent wrench up raises, from across a small room. I was open carrying a 1911, with the chamber empty, cause I was living in the guy's garage and practicing my draw. I got it drawn, cycled and into the weaver, in time for him to stop, still 5 ft from me. While that was truly wondrous speed of draw, it was still at least 3/4 second, during which I could easily have shot him 4x, and if the start had been 3 yds further away (but my gun AIMED at him, 3more hits would have been easy to attain, and that wold be without firing from retendtion, without backing up, and without kicking him off of me. This is plenty to compensate for a guy who is faster to charge than Fatboy Rick was. Most people are just WAY slow for drawing and hitting.
