I missed that in the story..? There was mention of a round coming in a car door, thru the front seat, and out the back door window; which to me seems like acceptable performance.

The 223 can be loaded with ammo that penetrates great or ammo that penetrates almost not at all. No idea what this jackass's gun was loaded with.

I've seen nothing that indicates anything in 223 does worth a hoot on windshields. the combo of glue, glass and acute angles requires steel cored 30 AK hardness and momentum. a tiny steel cap on a 60 gr 223 bullet just can't hack it.

Oddly enough, in the past I had seen M193 out penetrate M855 in light-to intermediate barriers under 100 meters...probably as a result of the higher muzzle velocity ( this was in 20inch barrelled M16A1 andA2" s...it was at longer ranges that the 62 grain stuff with 1-7 or similar rifling twist rates did better.
I'm still someone who has a preference for other calibers (at least in the 10-16 barrel lengths) but for what it brings to the party, 5.56( with appropriate ammo types and barrel lengths) will do it...angle of impact, different bullet construction; all of that stuff matters.
Probably why I favor stuff that's not particularly exotic, but performs with a reasonable degree of consistency in different usages .
Because sometimes, just getting through is half the battle.

only if you're dumb enough to be around vehicles, in daylight. 223 62 gr ball does well enough vs car bodies, within one shot, everyone has ducked down below the glass anyway. So aim at the car bodies, if you want to waste ammo. Me, I'll wait until I see flesh in my sights. I'm not blowing 20-30 rds to hit ONE enemy, and call in 30 more for a mile around.

you're only carrying 200 rds. 100 rds if it's 308, maybe 150 rds if it's 30 AK. if you need 30 rds to hit one guy, you can only handle 3- 7 guys.

when they are hiding behind something, why aint YOU behind something? why are you out there during daylight hours? why do you have no silencer on your rifle? those are FAR bigger issues than what you can shoot thru (and miss, most of your shots).

Federal Fusion - penetration thru the windshield and then 12 inches into gel, which you maintain is more than adequate:

M855:

Oddball DRT - (windshield test starts around 9:15 or so):

This one doesn't specify the load:
